Relapse with AML

Hi my name is Lyna Nguyen and I am 20 years old. I was first diagnosed with AML July 28, 2006 when I was 17. I Had a bone marrow transplat and my younger brother was my donor. It has almost been 3 years now that I have been in remission but just last summer of August 2009 I recently found out that I had relapsed again…So far I have undergone 3 rounds of chemotherapy. The plan right now is to aim for another transplant. This time my little sister will be donating her bone marrow. Luckily I was blessed with two siblings who were a “perfect” match for me. Its been 6 months now and so far no transplant. Each time we get closer to our date something seems to get in the way of it. Right now it is my lung infection that is getting in the way…hopefully this infection will go away soon cause if not i might have to start from square one again. If it comes down to that chances of this leukemia ever going away are becoming very slim. I thought cancer the 1st time was hard…2nd time I feel is even harder. Please if any one is reading this reply. Dealing with cancer can sometimes get really lonely.

    Hey girl… I never had cancer, but I had a friend who did, and an aunt who did.
    I’m so sorry you have to go through it all again. I have seen how brutal chemo is, and the isolation and fear.
    Know that you are cared about, and that I will be prayin for you.

    Dear Lyna,
    Cancer to me is the scariest thing that could ever happen to anyone. When I find things scary, I try to know as much about them as possible, which is how I ended up here. After reading your story, I keep trying to picture what you are going through. I know words can’t possibly describe it. And yet you are dealing with it. If I was in your situation, I dont think I could be as brave as you are. You really are a brave woman. You beat cancer once, and I am sure you will beat it again. Please be positive; they say the mind is powerful, and positive thoughts can really help. I just want you to know, that you inspire me. I go to a university full of clever people, but you inspire me because you have an ongoing battle in your life, and instead of giving up, you have continually fought. If it isnt too much of a hassle, please write back here and tell me how uve gotten along.

    Im praying for you and your two brave sisters. Recover fast; im sure your future children would love to hear of their mothers heroic battle against cancer.

    Hey,
    I’ve just been introduced to this website, so sorry it’s taken so long for someone to actually get back to you.

    I feel like our stories are almost one in the same – different dieseases though.

    I was first diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma (it’s a tumor in the tissue of the muscles from what I remember) when I was 15 in 2005. After a year and four months of treatment I was clean. For the three years after I counted myself as a survivor. I counted too soon.

    In the summer of 2009 I noticed the sight (my neck) was looking funny. Sure enough I was diagnosed again with Rhabdo in November (19 yr. old).

    So here it is 2010 and I’ve only had 3 sessions of chemo. The first plan they had me on was a trial that I had to leave because my liver functions would not put up with it.

    Just last week I started my new plan, something the doctors made up themselves – and I’ve been layed up in the hospital since Friday (5th March) with an infection in my neck and throat region – that they don’t know what it is.

    Well, that’s just my story of right now. I definitely feel what you mean about being lonely. My friends try but they don’t have anything to really compare it too. Broken bones or broken hearts just aren’t the same? Those seems like things that would be so much easier to deal with eh?

    Please get back to me – uh, however this works, okay?

    My name is Nana and i’m Thai ppl so i’m not good in english hope you understand what i’m trying to say to you. I was first diagnosed with AML August 12, 2009 and first chemotherapy was end after that i do bone marrow but the result is i’m relaspe agian i can’t do BMT i’m no have brother or sister so i dicide not to think abt BMT now i just don’t know what should i do for this thing. May be i’m not going to have second chenotherapy i’m scare if i go back to admit in hospital to have chemo maybe i’ll not come out to home agian i talk to my doctor to wait for my deciding about 1 month now blast in my bone marrow 38%. It very fast relaspe it just 1 month … you’re luckily !

    I agree Lyna…cancer can get really lonely. I’ve been there, believe me. I’m a two-time survivor.

    Hang in there—your courage is apparent, even just from this simple post.
    I know it isn’t easy but remember take it one step at a time.

    That’s great to have two sibling matches- that right there is an amazing gift.

    Keep coming back here for strength and hope…and trust me…we draw it from you too!

    I’m so sorry Lyna. I think it’s beyond unfair that you have to go through this again. But if it makes you feel any better, you are a very inspiring person. I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma late this January. I’m looking up to you because you’ve gone through this once before and beat it and I’m sure you’ll beat leukemia once again. You are the strongest woman I’ve heard of and I’m positive that you’ll reach the light at the end of this never-ending tunnel. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
