Concern #2: Body Issues

Question 1:

Do I lose all my hair during chemo?

Most teens will lose all their body hair during chemotherapy including pubic hair (considered cool by some), hair on their arms and legs, axillary (armpit) hair, and chest hair for boys. The good news is girls don't have to shave their legs and underarms. And lack of chest hair for guys is very "in" now.

A note of caution for girls: When the hair on your legs and underarms starts coming back in, be very careful shaving if you are still neutropenic. The slightest cut could cause a serious infection. You might use a hair remover like "Nair" instead of a razor or wait until your counts are normal again. For you guys, facial shaving presents the same risk.

Question 2:

Can I pierce my navel, or eyelid or anything else when I'm getting chemo?

Well, you could but…. Just make sure you go to a reputable place when your counts are high. That would mean just before your next course of chemotherapy. At least a couple of days before, so there is some time to heal before your counts drop again.

Question 3:

Can I get a tattoo?

TattoosOf course, the risk is the same as with body piercing. Even if your counts are good, you are still immuno-compromised. Your immune system is not up to snuff, so we suggest you wait until after therapy. You never really know how sterile the procedure is, even in a reputable place. It's just not a good idea and not worth the risk. Just wait.
