![]() Concern #3: Relationships Question 1: I'm concerned that my boy/girlfriend will be grossed out by my baldness, scars or central line. What should I do? Get a new boyfriend or girlfriend! You deserve it. Easy to say, but bald is beautiful. Most teens who lose their hair have great heads and their facial features, especially their eyes, really stand out. They're beautiful! One teen chose a medi-port (Port-a-Cath) implanted under the skin instead of an external catheter so it wouldn't show. This made the teen feel less self-conscious and her boyfriend was comfortable as well. But getting the best possible treatment should always be your first consideration. About scarring: Often teens are more conscious about their scars then are others. That brings more attention to an issue than if they just said, "This is me and if you don't like it, than I guess you aren't worth it!" If your girlfriend or boyfriend can't see the real you beneath a scar, then who needs him or her? You can do much better! Question 2: What if my boy/girl friend touches my central line? Should I "show and tell"? Absolutely. If you are close enough that he or she would be checking out the central line in your chest, I would say be very honest and by all means "show and tell." Describe how it works and that it saves you from getting poked with needles. It's the way you get your chemotherapy. It's part of your treatment. And it's not forever. But be careful to keep it securely taped in place. You don't want it getting caught up in the activity! |
